Tan Tong graduated from the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) in Paris in 1968. He was the chief registrar-cum-senior lecturer of the Malaysian Institute of Art before going full-time artist.

Tan’s special stylistics in his artworks are bright colours and clear forms.

Since the 1960s, Tan has been admiring the works of the 20th century artist, Pablo Picasso. As such, he has been researching and copying Picasso’s works to create his own unique “simple style”.

His paintings have a mixture of feelings and logic, exuding an ambience of beauty. The colours and forms are created as such to exhibit freshness and brightness, harmony and pleasure to the eye.

Tan believes that his works not only can “please the heart and eyes” but also move people. He wants to portray the pulse of human life, not only about the daily life. As such, we see that his works display fields of activities, where the moon, the sun, human beings and animals are all in motion!

At a time of maturity, an artist’s works do not only exhibit colours and forms but also brimful with life and hope.
