Dato’ Tay Mo Leong studied art in Taiwan at the age of 19. Later he made a study tour to Paris at the invitation of a French ambassador.

Tay started painting in watercolours in the 1950s. Later he became passionate about batik painting and became one of the three most outstanding batik painters in the country.

His artworks cover the scenery and people of Bali; Malaysian fishing villages and festivals. His attractive picture forms are bold and lively, with fresh bright colours and black outlines.

Having experienced the challenges and difficulties in creating batik paintings in the early years, Tay has published books to introduce the medium to the public. He has also given talks and demonstrations on the art form in many places. In order to maintain high quality in his batik paintings, he has imported colours from overseas and devised his own wax holder. He learned wax-fixing techniques from Japan to make a breakthrough in the traditional method of “Double Dye”. His passion and promotion of batik painting has gained recognition from the National Visual Arts Gallery. In 2004 he was declared as one of the three most outstanding batik painters in the country.

As a national artist, Tay reckons that to be an influential and outstanding artist, one has to be very creative.


画家拿督戴懋龙,19岁往台湾留学,主修纯美术。后来受法国大使的邀请,到法国巴黎游学2个月。

他从1950年代开始作画,开始是画水彩,画风独具一格。后来,由于对蜡染的热爱,转向峇迪画的制作,他是马来西亚三位最杰出的峇迪画家之一。

戴懋龙的画,题材涵盖巴厘的风土民情、马来西亚的渔村景色和节日庆典。他画中的图形大胆和奔放,亮丽的色块加上明显的黑色轮廓线,营造迷人和丰富多彩的峇迪画。

基于早年学习峇迪画制作的艰难,他出版书籍,介绍对峇迪画的认识和制作的技法
,也到处演讲和示范推展峇迪画艺术。为了提高峇迪画的素质,他从国外进口许多染料,亲手自制漏斗笔。他从日本和服工艺得到启发,研发了双重防染蜡染方式,突破蜡染画过去的技术限制。他对峇迪画的热爱和推广,获得国家画廊的认同和奖掖,在2004獲得國家畫廊肯定為大馬3大蜡染畫先驅之一。

身为国家级的画家,他认为:要当画家,就要当个有创作、有影响力的画家。
