Sia Boon Chuan graduated with a degree in education from National Taiwan Normal University in 1963 and was a former president of the Contemporary Malaysian Watercolourist Association.

He says, “I have been leading an artist’s life for 40 years, starting from drawing scenes to indulging deeply in watercolour. To me, painting starts “from drawing the scene” to “creating the scene”. The real scenery does not matter but the expressed feelings and spirits of the artist do.”

The subjects of Sia’s watercolours are far and wide, ranging from Gold Coast in Australia to Bali, Indonesia; the wild willows of Taipei; the Guanyin Mountain in Taiwan; the White Lotus Town of Tainan; the Zhou Village in Jiangnan; the lotuses of the West Lake and the The Bright Summit of Huangshan as well as the Yuping Pavilion.

He also paints local scenes such as the Red House of Melaka; the Komtar Tower of Penang; fishing boats of Terengganu; the coast of Kuantan and the fishing villages of Sarawak, each work exuding tranquillity and beauty.

Artists like to use the force of water and the spreading effect of colours to create their works. Sia specialises in the colour mixing and the technique of leaving blank spaces to create special characteristics of eastern and western art forms, exhibiting the mysterious effects of watercolour as well as the spirit of harmony in nature.

Sia hopes that while enjoying the latter years of his life, he can still expand his horizon and use his free and relaxed approach to create and promote watercolour paintings. He also hopes that the public would treasure such artworks.
